One hot July day, on a return trip home from New Orleans, Trish Dunaway received a call from Mercer University police: “Call your mother.” As the minutes raced by, she learned the tragic news: her ninety-three-year-old mother had been instantly killed in a traffic accident. Her mother’s story is a remarkable one: growing up in the 1920s in the Charleston, South Carolina Orphan House, losing her husband to cancer as a young married woman, and growing into a much-loved and honored prayer warrior. Trish gave herself a year to journal her grief. Through prayer, the ministry of the saints, journaling and poetry, Scripture, and memories of her Low Country heritage, she learned to choose God’s comfort He offered through a walk into His mercy and grace. She shares her journey during the year following her mother’s death as she learns how God teaches us to listen for His comfort in the face of despair.

Dupont University - the Olympian halls of learning housing the cream of America's youth, the roseate Gothic spires and manicured lawns suffused with tradition... Or so it appears to beautiful, brilliant Charlotte Simmons, a sheltered freshman from Sparta, North Carolina, who has come here on a full scholarship. But Charlotte soon learns that for the upper-crust coeds of Dupont, sex, Cool, and kegs trump academic achievement every time. As Charlotte encounters Dupont's elite - her roommate, Beverly, a fleshy, privileged Brahmin in lusty pursuit of lacrosse players; Jojo Johanssen, the only white starting player on Dupont's godlike basketball team; the Young Turk of Saint Ray fraternity, Hoyt Thorpe, whose heady sense of entitlement and social domination is clinched by his accidental brawl with a bodyguard for the governor of California; and Adam Gellin, one of the Millennium Mutants who run the university's 'independent' newspaper and who consider themselves the last bastion of intellectual endeavour on campus - she gains a new, revelatory sense of her own power, that of her difference and of her very innocence. But little does she realize that she will act as a catalyst in all of their lives.

The Curcuruto Girls is a collection of short stories based on the lives of five Italian-American sisters from the upstate New York town of Fulton. The stories take place between the 1920’s and the 1950’s, based loosely on true stories about the sisters in their youth. Carmella, Kathryn, Anna, Nancy and Josephine were remarkable in their devotion to each other and to their families. Their stories remind us that human nature remains the same, even as the world around us has changed drastically since their time. Times may have changed, but today we can still find something in common with one or more of the sisters. Some of us are like Carmella, struggling to break through a social barrier. Some of us are like Kathryn, working through difficult self-esteem issues. Others are like Anna and have so much to say and no place to say it. We might be like Nancy, determined to find true love without compromise. Or we might be like Josephine, having alienated so many people that we can only focus on just that one person we care about deeply. These charming stories are modern folktales, revealing timeless elements of the human spirit.

These two novels complete D. H. Melhem's trilogy, Patrimonies, that began with Blight. Stigma, a dark political satire, and The Cave, a post-nuclear fantasy, confront the crucial issue facing this generation: what kind of world will be our legacy? Unsettling and sometimes terrifying, both novels center on ideological paradoxes created by a military-industrial government pitted against American individualist politics. Stigma offers a vision of civil unrest, unemployment, and a chronic state of war. Books are recycled as toilet paper. Families are conscripted by lottery for the honor of war-work. Selected adults serve in a bizarre bomb factory. Youths are inducted into military service, children relegated to orphanages. Scathing yet awash in dark humor, Stigma relates one family's struggle to survive in and escape a system of perversity and horror. The Cave describes a motley group of people who flee to an abandoned cave, seeking shelter from a nuclear attack. Inside, viciousness, cowardice, and heroic gestures ironically transform their lives into a war. and individual desires, religious beliefs and stark reality move toward a cataclysmic finale, in which one man retrieves a sign of faith. Sparsely poetic, simple in tone but rich in allusion, Melhem's writing in The Cave, as in Stigma and in Blight, beckons readers to lift themselves out of their own lived reality, to look at the strange and threatening clouds on the not-so-distant horizon.

Your Dieting Daughter is a must read for anyone wanting to help contribute to a young woman’s development of a healthy self and body esteem, whether she is 13 or 30. Costin has updated the first edition of this book to reflect her 15 additional years of expertise on dealing with the tricky issues of body image, food, and weight in a culture that places an unhealthy emphasis on being thin. From aiding a young girl to lose weight for health reasons; to encouraging a young woman to accept her natural body size; to helping detect, prevent, and understand eating disorders, this second edition is full of practical and invaluable information. Chapters guide parents in the Do’s and Don’ts that will help a daughter to accept, respect, and care for her body. Readers will learn the importance of setting a good example and the critical need to take the focus from numbers and measurements - such as scale weight, clothing size, miles run, or sit-ups accomplished - to important goals like health, body acceptance, and finding physical activity to enjoy. Whether you are interested in being a good role model for you daughter, helping girls and women who are currently suffering from an eating disorder or body image issues, or raising the next generation of girls to value the size of their heart over their body size, this is a book not to be missed.
