It’s senior year, and Whitney Richards is tired of the constant pressures to be perfect. When she gets a D in Calculus, her mother immediately hires a tutor, worried Whitney won’t get into the “right” college—her alma mater—with imperfect grades. Her tutor, Taylor, is a quiet, mysterious boy who is unlike anyone Whitney has met before. But Taylor’s rougher upbringing has her mother and friends discouraging any type of relationship. Tired of having to play a part for everyone else, Whitney quits the cheerleading squad that once defined her social identity, and begins spending more time with Taylor. Her mom and friends worry Whitney is making a huge mistake, and even Taylor begins to show concern for some of her choices. But for the first time, Whitney is in the driver’s seat of her life. Will she be able to find her identity—and God’s plan for her life—before she throws everything away?

In WWII, the average age of the combat construction battalions, 37. "To Build; To Fight." Doubrava entered the war near its end, in 1943. He saw the rolling ocean of the Pacific for the first time, experienced seasickness, trudged on jungle coral and muck, yet pulled his own weight. On the crowded troopships of over 1000 men ("destination unknown,") this young Seabee helped liberate the Philippines. Later that year, in 1945, his 32nd (Sp) C.B. NCB Battalion liberated China serving the CAN DO mission. After the war, Doubrava enlisted in the Army Air Corps (AF), was assigned to the Pentagon and(color blindness prevented flying), then to isolation duty on Iwo Jima Island. Here he met the Japanese again, imbiding libations on the volcanic, black sandy beaches. Vorkink Machin, the author, in her tenth book under [email protected] Productions, excels in her profile of this feisty Czech veteran stating Doubrava is one of the best, and one of the last.

Ted Bates joined the Royal Horse Artillery in 1910. Moving to France in August 1914 with the British Expeditionary Force, he fought in battles at Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne. In October 1914 the Brigade marched to Ypres and there faced the German forces across the Flanders fields. Ted was shot and blinded on 21st October 1914 at Ypres. In his diary Ted describes the events of each day, in retreat and in advance, in defence and in the heat of battle. With humour and humanity he reveals the skill and professionalism of the regular solider, and his loyalty to his comrades and compassion for victims. The author, Ted’s grandson, sets each day in the context of the campaign. The causes and effects of military decisions flow through the daily events of the soldier’s life in battle. This book covers the campaign up to the end of the First Battle of Ypres in November 1914. Photos and maps illustrate the stages of the campaign. [email protected]
