It is 2099 - and the world is gradually drowning, as mighty Arctic ice floes melt, the seas rise, and land disappears forever beneath storm-tossed waves. For 15-year-old Mara, her family and community, huddled on the fast-disappearing island of Wing, the new century brings flight. Packed into tiny boats, a terrifying journey begins to a bizarre city that rises into the sky, built on the drowned remains of the ancient city of Glasgow. But even here there is no safety and, shut out of the city, Mara realizes they are asylum-seekers in a world torn between high-tech wizardry and the most primitive injustice. To save her people, Mara must not only find a way into the city but also search for a new land and a new home...

"More than twenty-five years in preparation, the present study provides a form-critical analysis of the first eighteen chapters of the book of Exodus. Dividing his discussion between the Exodus and Moses traditions and the wilderness traditions, Coats examines each unit of the text of Exodus in turn, showing how the units' internal structures reveal the genre and social setting in which the book was written and what that setting and genre mean for proper interpretation. Illuminating to scholars and students alike, this volume will open up a new perspective on this important section of Scripture."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Today there are at nine different routes for the Exodus and Red Sea crossing, and over a dozen locations for Mount Sinai. With each route placing the encampments of Israel in different locations. Is something wrong? Yes: they started from the wrong location! They have Israel on the east side of the Nile Delta, but Artapanus (second century B.C.), Philo (20 B.C. - 50 A.D.), Josephus (first century A.D.), Eusebius (263-339 A.D.), and John of Nikiu (seventh century A.D.) all have Moses or the children of Israel on the west side of the Nile. Mount Sinai has been found! Elim has been found! The Graves of lust (Numbers 11:34) have been found! Several catacombs filled with "innumerable" vases of cremated remains! The Egyptians and Arabs did not believe in cremation. The Romans and Greeks, who sometimes cremated, had no towns within 60 miles of these catacombs! Though the Jews did not cremate, one day out on the desert God burned thousands of them (Psalm 78:20-21), and they were buried in "The Graves of lust!" One of the catacombs is pictured in the background.

Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. In other words, they focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable--but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. This new and unique series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into a modern context. It explains not only what the Bible means but also how it can speak powerfully today.

So resounding is its message that echoes of the Exodus are heard throughout the Old and New Testaments and the present. Exodus names and terms permeate our biblical and liturgical vocabularies: Pharaoh, Moses, Aaron, burning bush, I AM, plagues, Passover, manna, Ten Commandments, forty days and forty nights, Ark of the Covenant. Exodus is, as Mark Smith reminds us, not only an ancient text but also todays story, calling readers to work against oppression and to participate in a covenant relationship with one another and God. With Smith as their experienced guide, readers are able to march through this basic book of the Bible with textual difficulties solved

In this volume Thomas Dozeman presents a fresh translation of the Hebrew text of Exodus along with a careful, critical interpretation of its central themes, literary structure, and history of composition. He explores two related themes in the formation of the book of Exodus: the identity of Yahweh, the God of Israel, and the authority of Moses, the leader of the Israelite people. / Dozeman clarifies the multiple literary genres within the text, identifies only two separate authors in the book s composition, and highlights the rich insights that arise from the comparative study of the ancient Near Eastern literary tradition. Also treating the influence of Exodus in the history of Jewish and Christian interpretation, Dozeman s comprehensive commentary will be welcomed by Old Testament scholars.

This #1 New York Times–bestselling saga traces Israel’s earliest days and the people who fought to make it their home The Exodus was just one ship among many that carried survivors of the Holocaust to Palestine to establish a new nation. But the path that Jewish immigrants took to enter British-controlled Palestine was a difficult one, fraught with danger and political intrigue. The boat was intercepted by British forces and the refugees were placed in concentration camps. Uris’s blockbuster novel traces the lives of the men and women who brave British naval blockades to help Israel come into being, from Ari Ben Canaan, who works tirelessly to smuggle in settlers, to Kitty Fremont, an American nurse drawn into a vast, tragic history. Weaving together fact and fiction, history and dramatic storylines, Exodus stands today as one of the most influential narratives of the founding of the State of Israel. A #1 New York Times bestseller for nineteen months, Exodus was made into an Academy Award–winning film. It is as essential to understanding the state of Israel today as when it was first published. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Leon Uris including rare photos from the author’s estate.
