"There's always a point in the season when you're faced with a challenge and you see what you're capable of. And you grow up." -- J.T. Curtis, head coach, John Curtis Christian School Patriots On Saturday, August 27, 2005, the John Curtis Patriots met for a grueling practice in the late summer New Orleans sun, the air a visible fog of humidity. They had pulled off a 19-0 shutout in their pre-season game the night before, but it was a game full of dumb mistakes. Head coach J.T. Curtis was determined to drill those mistakes out of them before their highly anticipated next game, which sportswriters had dubbed "the Battle of the Bayou" against a big team coming in all the way from Utah. As fate played out, that afternoon was the last time the Patriots would see one another for weeks; some teammates they'd never see again. Hurricane Katrina was about to tear their lives apart. The Patriots are a most unlikely football dynasty. There is a small, nondescript, family-run school, the buildings constructed by hand by the school's founding patriarch, John Curtis Sr. In this era of high school football as big business with 20,000 seat stadiums, John Curtis has no stadium of its own. The team plays an old-school offense, and Coach Curtis insists on a no-cut policy, giving every kid who wants to play a chance. As of 2005, they'd won nineteen state championships in Curtis's thirty-five years of coaching, making him the second most winning high school coach ever. Curtis has honed to a fine art the skill of teaching players how to transcend their natural talents. No screamer, he strives to teach kids about playing with purpose, the power of respect, dignity, poise, patience, trust in teamwork, and the payoff of perseverance, showing them how to be winners not only on the gridiron, but in life, and making boys into men. Hurricane Katrina would put those lessons to the test of a lifetime. Hurricane Season is the story of a great coach, his team, his family, and their school -- and a remarkable fight back from shocking tragedy. It is a story of football and faith, and of the transformative power of a team that rises above adversity, and above its own abilities, to come together again and prove what they're made of. It is the gripping story of how, as one player put it, "football became my place of peace."

Seventy-four-mph winds and above, creamy and steamy red beans and rice, and a grandmother with her grandson—Hurricane Season with a Side of Red Beans and Rice is a great way to find out about how hurricanes form and what to do if they are coming your way. The story unfolds as a conversation between grandmother and grandson while they cook dinner for their family. Hurricanes are unfortunately all too common in certain areas of the country. Everyone needs to know how to prepare for one coming and, more importantly, needs to know when to leave if one is heading your way. The book will also leave you with a little taste of Louisiana culture that will make your mouth water.

Much more than a catastrophic storm, Hurricane Katrina exposed the fragility of American society. For an American writer recently returned from Africa, Hurricane Katrina stripped away the illusion that we have engineered ourselves out of dependence on nature. The catastrophic storm revealed the historic roots of our growing inequality and presaged a dangerously unstable future. With climate change raging unchecked and unrelenting assaults on our civil society, Hurricane Season has only just begun.

Key West is the end of the world for some. A variety of people come to the island for an assortment of reasons. Our reason, aside from celebrating Reno's bachelor party, was to experience 'Margaritaville', not the bar - but that place in your mind or dreams where everything is perfect. The sun always shines, the people are always happy, there is no business talk and your worries simply drift away. Every day is a holiday and every meal is a feast. This is a place where you can escape. The sun energizes the soul, nighttime elevates the heartbeat, laughter fills the air, and you end up talking for hours with your friends you brought along or just met. You fall asleep to the sound of the sea quietly rushing in and out and awake to the sound of seagulls and the smell of sea salt. That's why we found ourselves walking down Duval Street that night. It was all present here, at least that is how we envisioned our journey to the Southern Zone. We were wrong.

Written in Lauren Denton’s signature Southern style, Hurricane Season tells the story of one couple’s unconventional journey to a full life and the relationships that must be mended along the way. Betsy and Ty Franklin, owners of Franklin Dairy Farm in southern Alabama, have decided to put life’s disappointments behind them. At least in theory. Ty manages their herd of dairy cows, while Betsy busies herself with the farm’s day-to-day operations and tries to forget the longing for motherhood set deep in her heart. But when Betsy’s free-spirited younger sister Jenna drops her young daughters off at the farm to attend a two-week art retreat in Florida, Betsy’s carefully constructed wall of self-protection begins to crumble. As those two weeks stretch much farther into the hot Alabama summer, Betsy and Ty learn to navigate the new additions in their world and revel in a home that’s suddenly filled with the sound of laughter and life. Meanwhile, record heat promises to usher in the most active hurricane season in decades. Four hundred miles away, Jenna is fighting her own battles. She’d once been free to travel and pursue a career in photography, but all that changed with the appearance of two pink lines on a plastic stick and a boyfriend who hit the road. At Halcyon art retreat, she finally has the time and energy to focus on her photography. As the summer continues, she wonders how her rediscovered passion can fit in with the life she’s made back home with her two children. When Hurricane Ingrid aims her steady eye at the Alabama coast, Jenna must make a decision that could affect both her and her children’s futures, and Betsy and Ty find themselves protecting their beloved farm as well as their own hearts.
