In 1976, Julian Jaynes proposed that the language of poetry and prophecy originated in the right, "god-side" of the brain. Current neuroscientific evidence confirms the role of the right hemisphere in poetry, a sensed presence, and paranormal claims as well as in mental imbalance. Left-hemispheric dominance for language is the norm. An atypically enhanced right hemisphere, whether attained through genetic predisposition, left-hemispheric damage, epilepsy, childhood or later traumas, can create hypersensitivities along with special skills. Dissociative "Others" may arise unbidden or be coaxed out through occult practices. Based on nearly twenty years of scientific and literary research, this book enters the atypical minds of poetic geniuses - Blake, Keats, Hugo, Rilke, Yeats, Merrill, Plath and Hughes - by way of the visible signs in their lives, beliefs, and shared practices.

Using a race, gender, and social-class context, this volume challenges the traditional notions of mental health and mental illness as they apply to African American women. The authors show that African American women are at increased risk for psychological distress because of factors that disproportionately affect them, including lower incomes, greater poverty and unemployment, unmarried motherhood, racism, and poor physical health.

I have stressed in this book, from a spiritual and practical standpoint, how one should utilize the mind in ways for which God created it. Much of the content can be clarified or substantiated with Biblical quotes. Therefore, girth the loins of your mind. Be prayerful with hope as you reach for the Creator to benefit your mind. Allow Him to be your mind regulator. He understand the mechanisms of each of His creation. He is the perfect Physician and Teacher of the mind. It is said that the mind is Satan’s playground. Yes, it is if we allow him to enter and lodge there. We need to build a wall of faith equipped with a closed door around the mind to prevent his entry. In doing so, we can more readily keep our mind’s eye attentive, it’s ears opened, and have an alertness that protects us from evil strongholds, even those of our own flesh. Listen to your spirit, heart and conscience. Allow your mind to be still and listen to the positive voices that alert you to the things of God, being fortified with strength on high. This will help you to avoid confusion, being overwhelmed, being lost and will bring focus. Strong willpower is needed and will help pull you up towards God, and not down to where abnormalities plague the mind. I impart to you this advice, from a place of experience, from a place of concern and from a place of love, rooted in God.

Do you sometimes feel you have to check your intellect at the church door, leaving reason behind to embrace the Christian faith? Do you hunger for a “full gospel” that includes the mind as well as heart and Spirit? Full Gospel, Fractured Minds? challenges charismatic and Pentecostal believers to discover the power of a well-maintained mind—a mind on fire—to match a heart on fire and to create a life that operates within the full counsel of God . Nañez shows how human reason helps us understand and interpret God’s Word as well as defend the gospel. He shows what the Bible teaches about the mind, and explores the backgrounds of nineteenth-century and modern culture, anti-intellectualism, Pentecostal history and beliefs, and popular misconceptions about human intellect in relation to the Christian faith. Full Gospel, Fractured Minds? helps men and women practice a Christian faith that reflects the whole person and the full gospel. “Rick Nañez calls Pentecostals and charismatics to seek a balance between mind and Spirit. This book will stir you to seek all that God has for you.” —From the Foreword by Stanley M. Horton, PhD

So when she learns she's inherited an old house and an abandoned gold mine in Eureka, Colorado, she doesn't hesitate to leave Houston behind. There's the colorful town mayor, Lucille, and her prodigal daughter Olivia, bitter librarian Cassie, and handsome, enigmatic Jameso Clark, who had a fascinating love-hate relationship with Maggie's father. Under the inspiring guidance of my mentor, Curt Sachs, this work was conceived, planned, and executed. It gained in dimension under the acute and patient perusal of Gustave Reese to whose brilliant propensity for clarity of thought and of style I owe a huge debt. Furthermore, the helpful suggestions made by Martin Bernstein and by J an LaRue are gratefully acknowledged. If Jaap Kunst had not kindly gone to the trouble of ordering, supervising the con struction of, and mailing to me from Amsterdam his personally designed monochord, an important section of this work could not have taken form. This preface is not complete, of course, without final thanks to my husband, Harvey B. Natanson, for his sustained interest and encouragement. R. B. Note As the present work goes to press, the political map of Africa is flowing into a new mold. Several countries have obtained independence, and new names and data should be con sidered: French Equatorial Africa has become (November 28-December I, 1958) four independent countries - Republic of the Congo: Brazzaville (formerly Middle Congo), Gabon Republic (formerly Gabon) , Central African Republic (formerly Ubangi-Shari), and Republic of Chad (formerly Chad). The Belgian Congo has become (June 30,1960) the Republic of the Congo: Leopoldville.

A Course in Miracles contains a program of study whose completion promises inner peace. Its curriculum is designed to rid us of fear and return us to love. Its three volumes amount to a massive 1200 plus pages of theory and practice. Students of the Course find the Text, the volume in which the Course's philosophy is laid out across a vast and tortuous terrain of theory, particularly difficult to navigate. Another Way of Seeing guides you across that terrain by identifying the basic tenets of the Course.Devoting each chapter to one basic teaching, Another Way of Seeing explains the Course in clear and simple terms. It then does what no other book on the Course has done so far-it illustrates the Course at work. Each chapter concludes with a discussion of a piece of classical literature that shows the principles of the Course put into practice. Dr. Poresky, a literary scholar and professor, brings her appreciation and knowledge of A Course in Miracles together with her conviction that literature teaches us about ourselves and our relationships with others, and by combining the two, she shows you another way of seeing.
