From Neil Abramson, USA Today bestselling author of Unsaid, comes a riveting novel that explores the complex connection between humans and animals. Veterinarian Samantha Lewis and her team are dedicated to providing a sanctuary for unwanted, abused, and abandoned dogs in New York City. But every day it gets harder to operate her no-kill shelter. Sam is already at her breaking point when she learns of an unidentified, dangerous virus spreading through their neighborhood. The medical community can only determine that animals are the carriers. Amid growing panic and a demand for immediate answers, suspicion abruptly falls on dogs as the source. Soon the governor is calling in the National Guard to enforce a quarantine--no dog may leave the area. Samantha knows from her own painful history that, despite the lack of real evidence against the dogs, a quarantine may only be the beginning. As questions about the source of the virus mount and clash with the pressure for a politically expedient resolution, Sam is forced to make life-altering choices. She finds allies in a motley crew of New Yorkers--a local priest, a troubled teen, a smart-mouthed former psychologist, and a cop desperate to do the right thing--all looking for sanctuary from their own personal demons. But the person Sam needs the most to unravel the mystery of the virus and save the dogs is the last one she'd ever want to call on--because contacting him will mean confronting the traumatic past she has fought so hard to escape.

Just Life reorients ethics and politics around the generativity of mothers and daughters, rather than the right to property and the sexual proprieties of the Oedipal drama. Invoking two concrete universals—everyone is born of a woman and everyone needs to eat—Rawlinson rethinks labor and food as relationships that make ethical claims and sustain agency. Just Life counters the capitalization of bodies under biopower with the solidarity of sovereign bodies.

Life has always been a mystery to me. I believe God intends it to be so. See section on Religion. I was born in the UK and grew up there. At 18 I volunteered for and flew with the RAF on Bombers during World War 2. I then trained for and eventually became a Chartered Mechanical Engineer. After various engineering jobs, I joined the Petroleum Industry on the technical marketing side. This enabled me to fulfill a strong desire to see the world. So far I have visited 76 different countries, many of them several times and to many different parts of each country. I have had very close friendships with people from over 40 different countries. Including China, Japan, America, Russia, Saudi Arabia, West Africa and Europe. In addition to the UK, I have lived in the Middle East, West Africa, and Cyprus, for long periods. In my book, which has been greatly influenced by my lifetime experiences, I have tried to cover what I consider to be the main elements of life, essentially, Humour, Love, Observation, Religion and Sex. I am greatly concerned by how religion has divided the world into various groups for no valid reasons, set people against each other, often creating torture, unnecessary suffering and killing. The only winners have been the people perpetuating the various religions, who never get involved, only manipulate proceedings to their own advantage. I would like to think that my book may have some influence on its readers to change the lives of people for the better. On a personal note, I would say to all people, particularly young ones, who are Dyslexic, do not give up. Just say, "I can and I will". And set yourselves various worthwhile objectives, to help you along the way. Good Luck.

Will I be content with the silence that creeps in my mind when demands are not put upon it? I was nervous about my upcoming free time. I was nervous about discovering who I am when I'm not moving. I had so many layers of characters to hide behind along my life's journey, that I wasn't sure where I would land. Who am I?' em> Mistakes happen whether we are sitting still or constantly moving; their benefits arise out of what we choose to make of them. This is the challenge that Melissa Lowdon addresses in her heartening and humorous memoir, a tale in which she seeks out her identity and realizes that it is necessary to make mistakes-even big mistakes. From sibling rivalry to identity crisis, boot camp to higher education, the highs and lows of single parenthood to the welfare lines that accompany them, awareness solidifies with the turning of each page and arrives at an ending that encourages applause. No one is alone in the journey to find an identity that fits, and Melissa encourages her readers to join her journey before diverging on their own paths.

The Life of Understanding

In Gadamer's hermeneutics, interpretation is inseparable from the broader concern of making one's way in life. In this book, James Risser builds on this insight about the juxtaposition of human living and the act of understanding by tracing hermeneutics back to the basic experience of philosophy as defined by Plato. For Risser, Plato provides resources for new directions in hermeneutics and new possibilities for "the life of understanding" and "the understanding of life." Risser places Gadamer in dialogue with Plato, with the issue of memory as a conceptual focus. He develops themes pertaining to hermeneutics such as retrieval as a matter of convalescence, exile as a venture into the foreign, formation with respect to oneself and to life with others, the experience of language in hermeneutics, and the relationship between speaking and writing.
