Billionaire oil trader Marc Rich for the first time talks at length about his private life (including his expensive divorce from wife Denise); his invention of the spot oil market which made his fortune and changed the world economy; his lucrative and unpublicized dealings with Ayatollah Khomeini's Iran, Fidel Castro's Cuba, war-ravaged Angola, and apartheid South Africa; his quiet cooperation with the Israeli and U.S. governments (even after he was indicted for tax fraud by Rudy Guiliani) and near-comical attempts by U.S. officials to kidnap him illegally. This sure-to-make-headlines book is the first no-holds-barred biography of Rich, who was famously pardoned by Bill Clinton, and resurfaced in the news during the confirmation hearings of Attorney General Eric Holder. The King of Oil sheds stunning new light on one of the most controversial international businessmen of all time, charting Rich's rise from the Holocaust, which he fled as a young boy, to become the wealthiest and most powerful oil and commodities trader of the century. From his earliest trading days to the present, Marc Rich's story is astonishing and compelling.

struggling with a recession . . . European nations at risk of defaulting on their loans . . . A possible global financial crisis. It happened before, in the 1970s. Oil Kings is the story of how oil came to dominate U.S. domestic and international affairs. As Richard Nixon fought off Watergate inquiries in 1973, the U.S. economy reacted to an oil shortage initiated by Arab nations in retaliation for American support of Israel in the Arab- Israeli war. The price of oil skyrocketed, causing serious inflation. One man the U.S. could rely on in the Middle East was the Shah of Iran, a loyal ally whose grand ambitions had made him a leading customer for American weapons. Iran sold the U.S. oil; the U.S. sold Iran missiles and fighter jets. But the Shah’s economy depended almost entirely on oil, and the U.S. economy could not tolerate annual double-digit increases in the price of this essential commodity. European economies were hit even harder by the soaring oil prices, and several NATO allies were at risk of default on their debt. In 1976, with the U.S. economy in peril, President Gerald Ford, locked in a tight election race, decided he had to find a country that would sell oil to the U.S. more cheaply and break the OPEC monopoly, which the Shah refused to do. On the advice of Treasury Secretary William Simon and against the advice of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Ford made a deal to sell advanced weaponry to the Saudis in exchange for a modest price hike on oil. Ford lost the election, but the deal had lasting consequences. The Shah’s economy was destabilized, and disaffected elements in Iran mobilized to overthrow him. The U.S. had embarked on a long relationship with the autocratic Saudi kingdom that continues to this day. Andrew Scott Cooper draws on newly declassified documents and interviews with some key figures of the time to show how Nixon, Ford, Kissinger, the CIA, and the State and Treasury departments—as well as the Shah and the Saudi royal family— maneuvered to control events in the Middle East. He details the secret U.S.-Saudi plan to circumvent OPEC that destabilized the Shah. He reveals how close the U.S. came to sending troops into the Persian Gulf to break the Arab oil embargo. The Oil Kings provides solid evidence that U.S. officials ignored warning signs of a potential hostage crisis in Iran. It discloses that U.S. officials offered to sell nuclear power and nuclear fuel to the Shah. And it shows how the Ford Administration barely averted a European debt crisis that could have triggered a financial catastrophe in the U.S. Brilliantly reported and filled with astonishing details about some of the key figures of the time, The Oil Kings is the history of an era that we thought we knew, an era whose momentous reverberations still influence events at home and abroad today.

Are there Old Testament roots of the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary? Margaret Barker traces the roots of the devotion to Mary as Mother of the Lord back to the Old Testament and the first temple in Jerusalem. The evidence is consistent over more than a millennium: there had been a female deity in Israel, the Mother figure in the Royal cult, who had been abandoned about 600BCE. She was almost written out of the Hebrew text, almost excluded from the canon. This first of two volumes traces the history of the Lady in the Temple, and looks forward to the second volume in which Barker will show how the Lady of the Temple is reclaimed in the advent of Christianity, and becomes the Lady in the Church. The result is breathtaking, and like all Barker's work, is impossible to put down.

Every human being in this world has a natural way of competing aggressively with one another; whether during their youth or when we are progressing in age. In fact, the idea never completely dies in us, but it is minimized as age takes its toll on us. As time passes, we later reveal our competitive edge either openly or secretly, while not wanting people to know what we are going to do amongst our playmates, companions, friends and even our neighbors. Furthermore, we hide our competitive mood despite our looking forward to using it to acquire our goal. Yet, we do not allow anybody, including our parents, to convince us to cease from achieving our competitive advantage. Although our desire for advantage may be rudimentary in our minds; we still always strive to achieve it by all means possible. As it is yet burning in our minds, discouraging pieces of advice from rivals are persuading us to step aside. Be it so, all that we are thinking about is to keep persevering in our competiveness, and not to give up as we are sensing that opportunity is the momentum for competing successfully. Immediately, as we are tuned to market competition, we stick to it and remain firm so as remain in business. As we are prospering in the market, we quickly set our minds on how to maximize the profit on our products. Since our aim is to keep on maximizing profit, we do not encourage any other firm with a similar product to compete close to our location. The point of view is that selfishness on our part has caused us to think that a firm has the power to monopolize market competition. Thus, to prevent an unfair monopoly government establishes regulations to protect and control deceitful marketing tactics. On the other hand, displaying avariciousness is not an abnormal trait, but one that is naturally embedded in us. However, this natural characteristic can get to the point where it surfaces and becomes observable by others. Although human beings may use a common technique to obtain profits for themselves, we criticize those who do so when it leads to excess. Avarice is displayed in everybody when we see valuable materials at our disposal and our eyes become affixed to them and we grab them like a hungry dog that cannot eat moderately; but tries to consume everything within its reach while leaving some small portion for any other dog that is just as hungry. Hence, it behooves us to remind ourselves that the live and let live scenario makes life worthy living.

This volume draws together a wide range of up-to-date research in the mathematics of oil recovery operations. It concentrates on three main themes: the statistical description of porous media and geological environments at various length scales; the derivation of appropriate, spatially averaged equations for multiphase displacement processes; and the solution of the resulting equations by numerical methods. The book serves as a valuable reference for the many researchers in this field working in industry, government institutions, and universities.
