In 1774 American independence was hardly inevitable—indeed, most Americans found it neither desirable nor likely. When delegates from the thirteen colonies gathered in September 1774, they were, in the words of John Adams, “a gathering of strangers.” With their differing interests and cultural perspectives, perhaps the only thing that bound them together was their common identity as subjects of the British Crown. But as they confronted the array of political, diplomatic, and military challenges facing them during the twenty-two months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, they gradually shed both their provincial and their British identities and became leaders of an American cause. With narrative verve and deep historical understanding, Richard R. Beeman tells the remarkable story of how the delegates to the Continental Congress, through courage and compromise, came to dedicate their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to the forging of American independence.

We can overcome Marxist ideas and make America great again by reconnecting with our faith and the godly principles of our Founding Fathers....Our founding fathers knew well the trouble we’d find ourselves in if we did not combine faith with action. John Hancock warned, “I conjure you, by all that is dear, by all that is honorable, by all that is sacred, not only that ye pray but that you act. Remember that where citizen complacency rules, wrong principles and policies will abound; and when it comes to sound government, the enemy is seldom them, it is generally citizen apathy.” Charles Finney expressed similar sentiments when he said, “The Church must take right ground in regards to politics...The time has come that Christians must vote for honest men and take consistent ground in politics.” Their words did not fall on deaf ears: Many former Presidents believed and trusted in God, and their leadership was blessed. Like our founding fathers, they knew how important it was to support Judeo-Christian values. But an increasing number of politicians are looking to socialism and Marxist ideology to enact policies—philosophies that have never helped America and have proved disastrous elsewhere....It’s imperative that all of us—Democrats, Republicans and independents—overcome misguided ideas and recapture godly principles in Dreams From Our Fathers. We need to trust and have faith in our Creator God to help us overcome our nations challenges just as our Founding Fathers trusted God during the Revolutionary War, when only one-third of patriots fought against British tyranny and won. At present, roughly 40% of Christians vote. Troubling, but still I believe God is for us, if we would only call on Him, and do our part to save this great Republic. For our nation, our freedom, and for our children....Be active and vote, and then, vote responsibly.

In early 1815, Secretary of State James Monroe reviewed the treaty with Britain that would end the War of 1812. The United States Navy was blockaded in port; much of the army had not been paid for nearly a year; the capital had been burned. The treaty offered an unexpected escape from disaster. Yet it incensed Monroe, for the name of Great Britain and its negotiators consistently appeared before those of the United States. "The United States have acquired a certain rank amongst nations, which is due to their population and political importance," he brazenly scolded the British diplomat who conveyed the treaty, "and they do not stand in the same situation as at former periods." Monroe had a point, writes Troy Bickham. In The Weight of Vengeance, Bickham provides a provocative new account of America's forgotten war, underscoring its significance for both sides by placing it in global context. The Napoleonic Wars profoundly disrupted the global order, from India to Haiti to New Orleans. Spain's power slipped, allowing the United States to target the Floridas; the Haitian slave revolt contributed to the Louisiana Purchase; fears that Britain would ally with Tecumseh and disrupt the American northwest led to a pre-emptive strike on his people in 1811. This shifting balance of power provided the United States with the opportunity to challenge Britain's dominance of the Atlantic world. And it was an important conflict for Britain as well. Powerful elements in the British Empire so feared the rise of its former colonies that the British government sought to use the War of 1812 to curtail America's increasing maritime power and its aggressive territorial expansion. And by late 1814, Britain had more men under arms in North America than it had in the Peninsular War against Napoleon, with the war with America costing about as much as its huge subsidies to European allies. Troy Bickham has given us an authoritative, lucidly written global account that transforms our understanding of this pivotal war.
