The speed and scale of urbanisation in India is unprecedented almost anywhere in the world and has tremendous global implications. The religious influence on the urban experience has resonances for all aspects of urban sustainability in India and yet it remains a blind spot while articulating sustainable urban policy. This book explores the historical and on-going influence of religion on urban planning, design, space utilisation, urban identities and communities. It argues that the conceptual and empirical approaches to planning sustainable cities in India need to be developed out of analytical concepts that define local sense of place and identity. Examining how Hindu religious heritage, beliefs and religiously influenced planning practices have impacted on sustainable urbanisation development in Jaipur and Indian cities in general, the book identifies the challenges and opportunities that ritualistic and belief resources pose for sustainability. It focuses on three key aspects: spatial segregation and ghettoisation; gender-inclusive urban development; and the nexus between religion, nature and urban development. This cutting-edge book is one of the first case studies linking Hindu religion, heritage, urban development, women and the environment in a way that responds to the realities of Indian cities. It opens up discussion on the nexus of religion and development, drawing out insightful policy implications for the sustainable urban planning of many cities in India and elsewhere in South Asia and the developing world.

Conceptions of 'sustainable cities' in the pluralistic and multireligious urban settlements of developing nations need to develop out of local cultural, religious and historical contexts to be inclusive and accurately respond to the needs of the poor, ethnic and religious minorities, and women. Religion and Urbanism contributes to an expanded understanding of 'sustainable cities' in South Asia by demonstrating the multiple, and often conflicting ways in which religion enables or challenges socially equitable and ecologically sustainable urbanisation in the region. In particular, this collection focuses on two aspects that must inform the sustainable cities discourse in South Asia: the intersections of religion and urban heritage, and religion and various aspects of informality. This book makes a much-needed contribution to the nexus between religion and urban planning for researchers, postgraduate students and policy makers in Sustainable Development, Development Studies, Urban Studies, Religious Studies, Asian Studies, Heritage Studies and Urban and Religious Geography.

Going beyond the more usual focus on Jerusalem as a sacred place, this book presents legal perspectives on the most important sacred places of the Mediterranean. The first part of the book discusses the notion of sacred places in anthropological, sociological and legal studies and provides an overview of existing legal approaches to the protection of sacred places in order to develop and define a new legal framework. The second part introduces the meaning of sacred places in Jewish, Christian and Islamic thought and focuses on the significance and role that sacred places have in the three major monotheistic religions and how best to preserve their religious nature whilst designing a new international statute. The final part of the book is a detailed analysis of the legal status of key sacred places and holy cities in the Mediterranean area and identifies a set of legal principles to support a general framework within which specific legal measures can be implemented. The book concludes with a useful appendix for the protection of sacred places in the Mediterranean region. Including contributions from leading law and religion scholars, this interesting book will be valuable to those in the fields of international law, as well as religion and heritage studies.

It is now widely agreed that the climate is changing, global resources are diminishing and biodiversity is suffering. Developing countries – many of them considered by the World Tourism Organization to be 'Top Emerging Tourism Destinations' (UNWTO, 2009) – are already suffering the full frontal effect of environmental degradation. The challenge for developing countries is a triple-edged sword, how can economic prosperity be achieved without the perpetual depletion of nature’s reserves, the destruction of rural habitat and the dislocation of traditional societies? Many emerging nations are looking increasingly to the tourism industry as the motor for economic development, with hospitality businesses at the forefront. This book uses twenty-five case studies to demonstrate how it is possible to create income and stimulate regional socio-economic development by using sustainable hospitality and tourism attractions. These case studies focus on issues such as the protection of indigenous cultures as a source of touristic curiosity; the preservation of the environment and the protection of endangered species – such as the plight of turtles in Sri Lanka or butterflies in Costa Rica to encourage tourism. Some cases cover government supported projects, for example, the green parks venture and regional tourism development in the Philippines, an archaeological park initiative in Honduras and the diversity of nature tourism in St. Vincent. Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism as Motors for Development is designed to give students, academics and practitioners a guide for best practices of sustainable hospitality operations in developing countries. Based on case studies, it provides a road map of how to achieve the goals of sustainability giving benchmark examples. The book not only taps into a contemporary business subject, but aims to provide readers with a better understanding of how sustainable theories can be put into practice in hospitality and tourism industries in developing countries.

Abstract: Design Thesis: Sustainable Urban Conservation ---A Design Strategy for the Renewal of Zhongshan Road Historic Block in Quanzhou City Abstract In our modern cities we have lost sight of the traditional understanding of urban space. Fast, unconsidered urban construction simply demolished everything for new development, whatever in developed or under developed countries. Historic blocks, especially those located in the commercial district of city, are undergoing the destructive transformation. In recent years, public start to focus on conservation of unique characteristic of city and search of the vanished past. Along with the urban economic development and adjustment of industrial structure in China, a majority of conservation projects are combined with commercial development. It is a sustainable urban conservation discussed in thesis. Conservation can not be understood simply that conserving without any changes. If we just pay attention on the single heritage building only, cultural atmosphere and historical environment is different to conserve. Combining conservation of heritage buildings with redevelopment of adjacent areas is the effective method. Zhongshan Road Historic Block is a representative study area for achieving the target of thesis. The conservation principle and method of historic block in China has reviewed for design strategy. Especially, historic Block is different from Heritage Conservation Unit or Historical and Cultural City, it needs a sustainable plan to support itself because it always presents huge scale and quantity. From the case studies, it has provided the solutions for the study area in Quanzhou. Basing on the analysis of study issues of Zhongshan Road Historic Block, case study starts with two points: planning and architecture. Planning Quanzhou is a congregation zone with multi-religion, unique multi-culture is another valuable heritage except architectural. Conservation of Confucius Temple in Nanjing was implemented in protecting its cultural environment. The focus of case study is on its conservation method and treatment of cultural environment. Architecture Shophouse is one of architectural features in Quanzhou; it is a major element to contribute the commercial environment as well. Chinatown in Singapore also is a conservation area occupied by numbers of shophouses. The purpose of case study is to survey the relocation of shophouse function and solution to conflict problem between commercial and residential use. Melody, HUANG YANI, 2006990960 Design Thesis: Sustainable Urban Conservation ---A Design Strategy for the Renewal of Zhongshan Road Historic Block in Quanzhou City According to government's conservation proposal, conclusion of case studies and site analysis, overall design strategy is composed of conservation and redevelopment. Conservation Š Heritage buildings is exploited to constitute plaza and opened to public after restoring the buildings and relocating the function. Š Shophouses as a medium contribute to continue the traditional environment and supply services for heritage buildings and tourism development. Redevelopment Š New development is the primary factor for economic return except the shophouses which is small units for rental. But for conserving the total historic environment, n

One of the most salient forms of modern-day tourism is based on the heritage of humankind. The majority of all global travel entails some element of the cultural past, as hundreds of millions of people visit cultural attractions, heritage festivals, and historic places each year. The book delves into this vast form of tourism by providing a comprehensive examination of its issues, current debates, concepts and practices. It looks at the social, physical and economic impacts, which cause destinations, site managers and interpreters to consider not only how to plan and manage resources but also how to portray the past in ways that are acceptable, accurate, accessible and politically relevant. In the process, however, the depth of heritage politics, the authenticity and inauthenticity of place and experience, and the urgent need to protect living and built cultures are exposed. The book explores these and many other current issues surrounding the management of cultural resources for tourism. In order to help students relate concepts to real-world situations it combines theory and practice, is student learning oriented, is written accessibly for all readers and is empirically rich.
