Emma ist schockiert und weist ihn mit aller Bestimmtheit zurück. Sie erfährt, dass er an Harriet gar nie interessiert war und all seine Artigkeiten allein ihr galten. Sie schwört sich, das Ehestiften bleiben zu lassen, weil sie nun in der misslichen Lage ist, Harriet diese Wendung erklären zu müssen.
