Who can answer the age-old question “Why am I here?” Sebastian, the Old Man, encounters his answers on his daily strolls. They come not through long essays or deep philosophical musings but through encounters with his friends—a young fatherless boy named Miguel, a Russian immigrant called Alexi, and Vivian, a retired nurse. He has finished his book, an ardent writing task, believing that one’s essence unfolds like a novel with chapters penned by life’s trials and joys. His response to the trials and joys offers a glimpse into his soul. Vivian and Sebastian visit the town library, where he places his book on a shelf as if letting it go for one last time. For whom? Then Vivian walks him home and they bid good night. The next day fearing a shocking surprise, she brings the doctor. Together they find a present marked for Miguel at the foot of the Old Man’s bed. They both see the nearly empty pill bottle, but Vivian suspects the worst.

More astounding stories of rare guitar finds and the music legends who owned them. Do you dream of finding a 1954 Stratocaster or 1952 Gibson Les Paul online, at a garage sale, or in the local penny saver? How about virtually rubbing elbows with one of your favorite rock legends? Following up his first-of-its-kind The Strat in the Attic, musician, journalist, and "guitarchaeologist" Deke Dickerson shares the stories behind dozens of more astounding finds including: A rarer-than-hens-teeth 1966 Hallmark Swept-Wing that originally belonged to Robbie Krieger of the Doors, stashed away in an attic in Alaska for forty years! A crazy-valuable 1958 Gibson Flying V belonging to a Chicago bluesman--who, it turns out, also happens to have an equally rare 1958 Gibson Explorer! An out-of-the-blue, a "to whom it may concern" email leads the author to a trailer park in Salem, Oregon, where one of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys' original 1940's Epiphone Emperor archtops is waiting to be purchased for a song! Luthier R.C. Allen relates the tales of buying Nat "King" Cole Trio guitarist Oscar Moore's Stromberg Master 400 archtop and of being gifted a 1953 Standel amp from Merle Travis! Buddy Merrill, the amazingly talented guitarist from the Lawrence Welk show, gives his 1970 Micro-Frets Huntington to the author, but only if he "promises to PRACTICE." Photos of the guitars and other exciting memorabilia round out a package that no vintage-guitar aficionado will want to be without! "Deke Dickerson's love for guitars and his genius for finding some of the rarest birds in the musical aviary is matched by his not-inconsiderable writing chops. The man knows how to tell a great story." --Jonathan Kellerman

Dead in Attic is a collection of stories by Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose, recounting the first harrowing year and a half of life in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Celebrated as a local treasure and heaped with national praise, Rose provides a rollercoaster ride of observation, commentary, emotion, tragedy, and even humor -- in a way that only he could find in a devastated wasteland. They are stories of the dead and the living, stories of survivors and believers, stories of hope and despair. And stories about refrigerators. Dead in Attic freeze-frames New Orleans, caught between an old era and a new, during its most desperate time, as it struggles out of the floodwaters and wills itself back to life.

One of the greatest French novelists, Balzac was also an accomplished writer of shorter fiction. This volume includes twelve of his finest short stories - many of which feature characters from his epic series of novels the Comédie Humaine. Compelling tales of acute social and psychological insight, they fully demonstrate the mastery of suspense and revelation that were the hallmarks of Balzac's genius. In The Atheist's Mass, we learn the true reason for a distinguished atheist surgeon's attendance at religious services; La Grande Breteche describes the horrific truth behind the locked doors of a decaying country mansion, while The Red Inn relates a brutal tale of murder and betrayal. A fascinating counterpoint to the renowned novels, all the stories collected here stand by themselves as mesmerizing works by one of the finest writers of nineteenth-century France.

Robert Penn Warren's reputation as a poet, though always considerable, has soared in the last decade, as indicated by his recent selection as America's first poet laureate. The Braided Dream is one of the first book-length studies of the poetry that has led to Warren's recent rise to eminence and the first to consider his final collection, Altitudes and Extensions. In a communicable, jargon-free style that will appeal to the nonacademic reader as well as the serious scholar, Randolph Paul Runyon provides a detailed and illuminating guide to a body of poetry that, despite its greatness, has until now seemed resistant to full understanding. Every poem of Warren's last four sequences -- Now and Then, Being Here, Rumor Verified, and Altitudes and Extensions -- is given a close reading, with a precise laying-out of words, phrases, and recurring images that not only enrich the texture of the poetry but are themselves the texture. Runyon demonstrates the relevance of Freud's concept of the dream work of the unconscious to a reading of this tightly interwoven poetry. He shows how Warren's poems assume additional meanings by the poet's very arrangement of them, deepening his thesis by arguing that "poems eat poems" as each reuses and reconceptualizes the imagery of its predecessor, frequently with ironic or parodic effect.

These early works by H. P. Lovecraft were originally published in the first half of the 20th century. As a collection of short stories, this represents Lovecraft's tales in the Cthulhu Mythos, and includes 'The Call of Cthulhu', 'The Dunwich Horror', 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth', 'The Unnamable', and other titles. Born in 1890 in Rhode Island, USA, Lovecraft began writing at a very young age, quickly developing a deep and abiding interest in science. In 1913, Lovecraft joined the UAPA (United Amateur Press Association) but it was four years later, in 1917, that he began to focus on fiction, producing such well-known early stories as 'Dagon' and 'A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson'. However, it was during the last decade of his life that Lovecraft produced his most notable works, such as 'the Dunwich Horror' and 'The Call of Cthulhu' which subsequently earned him his place as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

This is a journey through, rather than a book of short stories and tales of the, “Mystical Ireland” that is my home. A land of celebration and a land of those who are not too saintly or too scholarly. It is an island of Banshees, Witches, Pookas and other strange creatures. There is much humour to be had in the Emerald Isle and some of these stories reflect that humour, be it rural or urban. These are stories of hardworking people and those who prefer to avoid work, whether it be hard or easy. It is also a book that describes an Ireland that is fast disappearing in this modern world, bringing with it its traditions and values. Much of what you read in these stories is still part of life in the “Emerald Isle” and we folklorists are trying our best to ensure that their memory will remain for generations to come. So come with me in this book to the land, where mists hide more than the eye can see and the mind accept as truth.
