Fiction. "That the fresh and haunting new voice Lindsay Stern exercises in TOWN OF SHADOWS is difficult to classify ought to serve only to make it impossible to ignore. Rife with arch urgency, brief density, and fruitful disregard for traditional genre bounds, Stern's debut is an important addition to the recent rejuvenation of the novella form. Through its razor-sharp technique, translucent diction, and elliptical vignette structure, TOWN OF SHADOWS peels layer from layer to reveal a complex, perspicacious author who is unafraid to trouble the water where poetry and prose mingle. Stern's youth and precocity are certainly striking, but don't let them dupe you: here is a young Lydia Davis or Anne Carson unspooling only the beginning of a corpus all her own. Lindsay Stern defines the term 'one to watch.'"—Laura Goode "TOWN OF SHADOWS is Winesburg, Ohio coated in arsenic, stippled with word math, and carved on a butterfly's body. What Lindsay Stern creates here is throttling and gorgeous, a child's hand grasping for a lightning storm trapped in a white balloon."—J. A. Tyler

The war is on. The youth who returned from across the border are in direct confrontation with the armed forces. The sound of blasts, both grenades and IEDs, is audible time and again. The bullets fired from rifles and the ammunition from rocket propelled guns are a rage and these ricocheted the atmosphere .The citadel of pro-India political leadership has crumbled and the civilian governance is like ricks spread in various places unable to wield any authority. The semblance of government control is visible through forces personnel who roam in groups with guns dangling down their shoulders . The youngsters understood the story behind violence but not many stories conceived in the womb of the conflict. Stories of deceit and exploitation. And these stories gave birth to unholy nexus between the venal and the brute, people of different religion, varied outlook and background. And then such people colluded with each other to indulge in loot and plunder robbing our nation of resources. Resources of natural wealth and even human resources. The emotional and psychological health received a dent. In the process a love story, rather two go bust. However, two young women, bearing the brunt of conflict and the intrigues, brave all odds to help the innocent angels to move on in life.

Shadows in Jerome is a tale which introduces the reader to the old town of Jerome on Mingus Mountain in its heyday as the center of the world's copper mining industry, but it is also a story involving the town's "afterlife" as a tourist attraction and a historical site; a treasure to travelers from all over the world. Jerome is a real town, and the dynamics and vitality of the things which happened there in years long gone rival those of any old western town in the United States. Today, it is a so-called ghost town. Much of what it was has vanished. Still, it's amazing that so much of it remains. At less than two square miles in size, and with no more then fifteen thousand residents at any one time and far fewer than that for most of its life, it was a mighty midget of a town. Some of its one-time residents are said to still be present in a few of its old buildings, albeit in different form. In this story, a couple of young wayfarers encounter more adventure and mystery than they bargain for when they find the old town paradoxically in a state of death and decay as well as vibrant activity; its streets and shops filled by the bustle and gaity of tourists who come to walk its quaint up-and-down sidewalks and see the old buildings that once made up the city of Jerome, Arizona, the billion dollar copper town. The old place was once the center of serious endeavor by men of means, men of ambition and authority, as well as men who felt nothing should be allowed to block their path toward wealth and power. Desire for these things was not the only kind of passion which existed in Jerome; love in all of its attendant forms was present as well, for beautiful women lived there. But there is even more in Shadows in Jerome. Mystery, and a touch of horror complete this story. The wild and grand spectacle of the mountains and the nearby Verde Valley, as well as the picturesque charm of the old town in the clean air high on the side of Mingus Mountain not only help to hide evil, but they assist in posing philosophical questions as well; is it love, or through hate, that one finds forever? And by what means does one reach it? Enter the pages of this novel and you will be able to feel the forgotten years that pervade the old streets of Jerome as the very past seems to rear itself before you; here men and women lived and died. Haroltry, gambling and heavy drinking were not any more unusual here than was the coming of the long shadows at the end of each day. What is in store for those who lie for profit and love? What happens when young girls are taken too soon? How does one pay for transgressions against life and the living? Shadows in Jerome addresses these questions in a very unique way. At less than two square miles in size, and with no more than fifteen thousand residents at any one time and far fewer than that for most of its life, it was one mightly midget of a town.

The story of how the Holocaust decimated Jewish life in the shtetls of Eastern Europe is well known. Still, thousands of Jews in these small towns survived the war and returned afterward to rebuild their communities. The recollections of some 400 returnees in Ukraine provide the basis for Jeffrey Veidlinger’s reappraisal of the traditional narrative of 20th-century Jewish history. These elderly Yiddish speakers relate their memories of Jewish life in the prewar shtetl, their stories of survival during the Holocaust, and their experiences living as Jews under Communism. Despite Stalinist repressions, the Holocaust, and official antisemitism, their individual remembrances of family life, religious observance, education, and work testify to the survival of Jewish life in the shadow of the shtetl to this day.

Justinus Kerner (1786–1862) was one of the most celebrated figures in nineteenth-century German culture. A physician by training, he was also a leading member of the Swabian Romantic circle of poets which included, among others, Ludwig Uhland and Gustav Schwab. Kerner’s international fame rests primarily on his contributions to the investigation of paranormal phenomena. The most important of these was his exhaustive case study, Die Seherin von Prevorst (The Seeress of Prevorst, 1829). The book was translated into English in 1849 by the English writer, Catherine Crowe (1803–76). Until the present, this has been the only work of Kerner available in English. Apart from his many scientific publications and his poetry, Kerner was also the author of one of the more intriguing literary works of German Romanticism, Die Reiseschatten (Travel Shadows, 1811). Ostensibly an account of his travels through Germany and Austria following his graduation from the University of Tübingen, the book is a highly imaginative, almost surreal concoction of Romantic, sentimental, grotesque, satirical, and Old German folkloric elements. Attributed by Kerner to an itinerant “shadow performer” named Lux, Travel Shadows was inspired by the tradition of “Chinese Shadows” (ombres chinoises) and represents Kerner’s attempt to create a travel narrative in the form of a grandiose shadow show. In the introduction to his translation of Travel Shadows – the first in English – Harold B. Segel situates Kerner’s work in the context of the emergence of a German shadow show tradition in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
